Asia IP at INTA 2025 – San Diego Highlights

Asia IP provided on-the-ground coverage of the 2025 International Trademark Association (INTA) Annual Meeting in San Diego, with Publisher Darren Barton and Managing Editor Gregory Glass in attendance.

The Asia IP team connected with global intellectual property leaders, explored emerging trends in IP law and shared insights from one of the world’s most influential gatherings in the field.

The WIPO Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge (GRATK) was celebrated as a landmark achievement after 25 years of negotiation. The treaty, adopted in May 2024, is the first to directly address traditional knowledge and indigenous communities within the WIPO framework. Experts highlighted its role in fostering inclusion, transparency and ethical engagement with indigenous knowledge systems. It requires patent applicants to disclose the origin of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, aiming to empower indigenous peoples and protect their cultural heritage.

Experts tackled the disruptive impact of generative artificial intelligence on the music industry in a session titled “The Business of Music: IP, AI and the Future of Creativity.” Panelists discussed challenges like streaming fraud, the loss of human artistic identity, and the rise of AI-generated content. Initiatives such as Humanable, which certifies AI-free music, and the C2PA standard for content authenticity were highlighted, alongside proposed legislation like PODRA to combat digital replica abuse.

The Annual Meeting spotlighted “The Business of IP” as its central theme, emphasizing intellectual property’s vital role in innovation, economic growth, and business strategy. Leaders from Qualcomm, Deris and Bristol Myers Squibb highlighted California’s innovation ecosystem, the evolving role of IP professionals, and the resilience of the IP community amid global challenges. With over 10,000 registrants from over 140 jurisdictions, the event featured more than 200 speakers and 188 exhibitors. INTA also reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity and announced London as the host city for its 2026 meeting.

Global IP leaders explored how intellectual property offices are adopting AI to modernize operations and improve efficiency. Speakers from the UAE, Norway and Brazil shared how their offices are integrating AI tools – from automated search engines and chatbots to back-office systems – while emphasizing the need for legal safeguards and human oversight. The session highlighted both the promise and uncertainty of AI in IP, with experts stressing the importance of transparency, predictability and responsible implementation.
