ASEAN intellectual property offices have strengthened cooperation with leading commercial IP information providers in a move that could significantly improve the availability, quality and usability of intellectual property data across Southeast Asia. The initiative, announced through the ASEAN IP Portal, represents a major step in the region’s digital transformation efforts.
Under the agreement, ASEAN IP offices will cooperate with Patsnap, Questel and WIPS to facilitate the sharing of selected ASEAN intellectual property data. In exchange, participating offices will gain access to IP management software, AI-assisted search tools and IP strategic assistance designed to support examination functions.
The partnership comes as patent and trademark offices worldwide face increasing pressure to manage rapidly growing volumes of filings. Advances in artificial intelligence are being deployed to enhance classification, searching and prior-art analysis, enabling examiners to process applications more efficiently while maintaining quality standards.
The agreement will facilitate data sharing through the ASEAN IP Register, a regional database developed in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization and the ASEAN Working Group on Intellectual Property Cooperation. The register currently contains more than 8.6 million IP registrations spanning 10 participating ASEAN member states.
For businesses, the benefits could be substantial. One longstanding challenge in Southeast Asia has been the uneven accessibility of IP data across different jurisdictions. Improved access to regional information can help companies conduct due diligence, perform clearance searches and identify licensing or commercialization opportunities more effectively.
The initiative also aligns with ASEAN’s wider intellectual property strategy. Policymakers across the region increasingly view modern and interconnected IP infrastructure as a prerequisite for innovation-driven growth. Enhanced information sharing and analytical capabilities are expected to support these objectives.
AI-assisted search tools are likely to attract particular attention. Patent searching has become increasingly complex as global patent literature expands. Modern AI systems can improve search accuracy, identify relevant prior art more efficiently and help reduce examination bottlenecks.
The agreement underscores ASEAN’s ambition to position itself as a leading innovation hub. With a rapidly expanding digital economy, a young population and growing research activity, the region is strengthening institutions that support creativity, entrepreneurship and technological development.
While implementation details will continue to evolve, the partnership sends a clear message: ASEAN intends to modernize its IP ecosystem through deeper cooperation, greater transparency and wider adoption of advanced digital technologies.
