Indonesia introduces new rules to speed up trademark process

Indonesia has introduced new rules that significantly speed up its trademark registration process.

Under Ministry of Law Regulation No. 5 of 2026, which took effect on February 23, 2026, straightforward trademark applications with no objections may now proceed to registration in as little as three months from filing. Applications must be published within 15 days, followed by a two-month period during which the public can file objections. If none are raised, the Trademark Office will complete its examination within about 30 days.

The regulation also sets clearer procedures for updating applicant details or transferring ownership of pending applications, though these requests may temporarily pause the examination process. To benefit from the faster timeline, applicants may want to complete ownership changes before filing or wait until after registration is complete.

Additional provisions address force majeure situations – such as natural disasters or civil unrest – that may prevent applicants from meeting deadlines, allowing them to request extensions. The rules also tighten eligibility for collective trademarks, which can now be filed only by recognized groups or associations.

Overall, the regulation aims to make Indonesia’s trademark system faster and more structured while still maintaining reliable review procedures.
