SIPO Meets WIPO in Beijing

On July 9, SIPO Commissioner Shen Changyu met with WIPO Director General Francis Gurry and his delegation in Beijing. The two sides had in-depth discussions on issues such as WIPO opening an office in China. 
   
Shen said it is of great importance that WIPO opens an office in China which will not only facilitate daily liaison and cooperation between departments of SIPO and WIPO, but also increase mutual understanding and consensus, benefiting Chinese intellectual property users with more convenient and higher-quality services in particular. He expected the office would play its role in its future operation and make new contributions to the deepening and expansion of the friendly and cooperative relations between the two sides.
   
Shen reviewed the development of the two sides' cooperation in the first half of 2014. He pointed out that with the speedy development of China's intellectual property, we need to timely update the cooperation framework based on new situation and further enrich cooperation contents. In particular, the setting-up of WIPO's Chinese office provides new channels and possibilities for future cooperation. He suggested the two sides further strengthen cooperation in personnel exchange and training, information technology, business promotion for intellectual property, raising public awareness on intellectual property, joint research, etc.
   
Gurry thanked the Chinese government for strongly supporting WIPO set up its Chinese office. He said that the setting-up of WIPO's Chinese Office is quite important, which opens a new chapter and is a milestone in cooperation between the two sides. In addition, Gurry expressed his appreciation over China's great achievements in filing international patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). He said that SIPO, as a PCT Receiving Office, has surpassed Germany to become the third largest user of the PCT system. WIPO is confident in deepening the cooperation with SIPO and hopes the two sides conduct effective cooperation in more ways.
   
Both sides also exchanged ideas on issues such as the latest statistics of Chinese patents, the process of China joining the Hague Agreement, etc.
   
SIPO Deputy Commissioner He Zhimin and WIPO Deputy Director General Wang Binying also attended the meeting.
   
The WIPO delegation led by Gurry will also visit other Chinese government departments related to intellectual property, attend the ceremony for the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances, and unveil WIPO's Chinese Office.
