Deacons promotes three to partner, include two IP lawyers

Deacons, Hong Kong’s longest established and largest independent law firm, has promoted three lawyers to partner. The newly appointed partners are Tracy Li and Theresa Luk from the intellectual property group and Vincci Ip from the financial services group.

These appointments bring the total number of partners at Deacons to 56. Key details of the new IP partner appointments:

Tracy Li, partner, intellectual property

Li is qualified as a solicitor in Hong Kong. She has extensive experience in advising strategic issues in IP protection and enforcement in mainland China. She has supported many multinationals and regional businesses in managing brands and trademark matters, particularly on IP portfolio management and anti-counterfeiting strategies. She has successfully obtained well-known trademark recognition and has established personal name rights for international brands and renowned fashion designers in non-contentious proceedings. On commercial side, Li has represented clients in IP transactions, involving due diligence of IP asset for mergers and acquisitions, licensing, assignments, brand collaborations, and negotiation of co-existence agreements. She is also experienced in advising on entertainment matters such as movie clearance and music clearance in China.

Her clients are in a variety of industries, including luxury brands, fashion, hotels, advertising, venture capital funds, electronic payment services, and ecommerce platforms. Among them, she has assisted ecommerce platforms with compliance issues from time to time. Her in-depth understanding on ecommerce issues in China allows her to formulate pragmatic marketing and brand protection strategies for brand owners on e-commerce platforms. Li is fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Theresa Luk, partner, intellectual property
Luk is qualified as a solicitor in Hong Kong. She has extensive experience in the field of intellectual property protection and enforcement in Hong Kong in areas such as trademark, patents, registered designs, trade secrets, confidential information, passing off, copyright, company names and domain names. She also holds an Honours Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences from the University of Toronto. Her science and litigation background makes her one of the few patent litigators in Hong Kong.

Luk also advises on a wide range of IP commercial and legal compliance matters relating to clinical trials, advertising, copyright clearance, privacy and personal data protection, sale of goods, product guarantees, consumer protection, and trade description and unfair trade practices. She is also one of the few lawyers in Hong Kong specializing in entertainment and media law. She has been assisting clients in various aspects of video/film production such as clearing chain of title, drafting and negotiating production, crew, cast and location agreements, and advising on the use of IP in films and advertisements. She also advises on artist service and management agreements, as well as agreements for engaging artists by advertising companies. She speaks English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
