CCPIT Patent and Trademark Law Office has embraced technology in the time of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, taking part in two firsts in China. On February 17, the firm’s trademark team was part of the first cloud hearing held over the internet in the Beijing IP Court. On April 8, the trademark team was part of another first: the first remote video hearing of a retrial case held by the Supreme People’s Court.
According to a statement issued by the firm, the retrial case is a non-use cancellation dispute, which involves considerable evidence. The Supreme People’s Court applied a remote video hearing system called Zhi Yun for the first time, and conducted activities such as court investigations and court debate according to the law.
“Our attorneys Gang Hu and Xiaoping Wei, representing the applicant of the retrial, actively cooperated with the court in testing the hearing system and smoothly completed the whole hearing process, including presenting opinions, evidence-exchanging and signing court records,” the firm said.
“By way of [holding a] remote video hearing online, the Supreme People’s Court fully secured the rights of both litigation parties during the epidemic period of coronavirus,” the firm said. “It is said that the Zhi Yun hearing system will be promoted and applied in the courts of China. With increasing in-depth integration of informatization with trial, the courts of China will surely bring more convenience to the litigation parties.”
