Rouse Has New Analytical Search Tool

International intellectual property consultancy Rouse has a new analytical search tool it calls CIELA – China IP Litigation Analysis.

CIELA is a free-to-use website enabling IP owners and their counsel to evaluate IP litigation venues across China, says Chris Bailey, Rouse’s deputy China country manager. “Users can obtain statistics on IP rulings for the whole of China or focus on specific courts,” Bailey says. “With CIELA it is possible to quickly see which Chinese courts award higher damages, or conclude cases more quickly compared to other jurisdictions.”

CIELA can be accessed at www.ciela.cn.

The data in the CIELA website comes from 13 IP courts around China. Currently there are over 5,000 published rulings and IP judgments loaded into the database, but the geographical scope and number will continue to increase as more courts publish IP judgments, the firm said in a statement.

“While there are existing IP law databases, there is no other database that actually extracts data for statistical analysis,” said Bailey. “CIELA is the first of its kind and will fulfil a growing demand for hard data about IP litigation in China.”

Bailey says the firm’s research team can use CIELA to pinpoint and analyse judgments to a greater level of detail to find out how judges have assessed damages and to identify issues that have arisen in previous trials which potential litigants should be aware of.
