A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was recently signed between the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) and information agency Philippine Information Agency (PIA) to ignite interest at the grassroots level and foster a better knowledge of intellectual property. IPOPHL Director General Rowel S. Barba and PIA Director General Jose A. Torres Jr. signed the agreement.
Under the MOU, IPOPHL will educate and enable PIA personnel and partners to implement best practices that protect their own intellectual property rights as well as the intellectual property of others by offering training seminars. As for PIA, it will see to it that IPOPHL makes the most of its extensive network of media outlets and platforms and participates in events that interact with the media and residents in various areas and provinces.
IPOPHL and PIA are presently working on a work plan that will outline the precise actions and obligations that each party will do to guarantee that the MOU produces tangible results in igniting and maintaining increased public interest in intellectual property.
“IPOPHL is thankful for the support that PIA commits to provide under this partnership. We are confident in increasing IP’s presence in local areas because your organization serves as the government’s leading grassroots public information arm,” said Barba.
The MOU with IPOPHL was also welcomed by PIA’s Torres, who promised to ensure that the country’s regional offices and provincial information centres spread the word about IP as a vital component of its economy and culture. According to Torres, “more people will understand and value intellectual property through effective dissemination of information, which will help in the growth of our nation.”
