Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) intends to add 22 items to the GI list in 2025 to raise the market value of geographical indication (GI) products to more than B5.9 billion (US$170.4 million).

According to DIP director general Nusara Kanjanakul, 216 GI products contributed over B77 billion (US$2.2 billion) to Thailand’s economy in 2024, an increase of approximately B20 billion (US$577.6 million) compared to 2023. She also emphasized that GI goods are essential for supplying premium raw materials and fostering the growth of the nation’s food sector.

They are also essential to Thailand’s soft power. The country’s well-known GI products, such as rice and coffee, are vital export commodities accepted in more than 30 nations, including the EU, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Cambodia. The Thai Ministry of Commerce is currently looking for ways to increase the market for GI products by working with leading retailers like Tops’s Jing Jai Market and other local supermarkets to promote seasonal GI items. The nation also intends to include GI items on the menus of Thai Select and Michelin-starred eateries.

The ministry is dedicated to helping farmers lower production costs, increase online sales for broader market reach and improve packaging to support GI producers.
