Philippine group lauds passing of house bill to call for changes to the IP code

According to the most recent YouGov consumer polls commissioned by the Coalition Against Piracy (CAP), the Philippines will significantly profit from imposing site blocking to combat piracy due to the thriving PHP1.60 trillion creative industry, a major contributor to the nation’s economy.

Telecommunications company Globe Group announced this as it celebrated the passage of House Bill No. 7600, which calls for changes to the nation’s 26-year-old Intellectual Property Code, including the ability to block websites. These changes are intended to close legal gaps that have allowed online piracy to persist and to give regulators more authority to take enforcement action against violators.

The House of Representatives recently passed the law, which was authored by Rep. Joey Salceda of Albay’s 2nd District. The Senate will then get the measure at that point.

The Globe Group commends Salceda for guiding House Bill No. 7600 to a successful vote in the House.

“This is a significant victory for the creative sector since the measure is getting closer to becoming a law,” said Yoly Crisanto, chief sustainability and corporate communications officer at Globe Group. “The company is getting closer to securing stricter protection for our content producers and their livelihood.”
