The Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Law and Human Rights Ministry stressed the significance of safeguarding traditional knowledge and genetic resources for promoting human well-being.
“Indonesia is a country rich in biodiversity, with a wide range of genetic resources and traditional knowledge,” Director General of Intellectual Property Min Usihen stated during the regional gathering in Jimbaran, Bali, held on May 9, 2023.
She noted that through Government Regulation (PP) No. 56 of 2022 on intellectual property, Indonesia is strongly dedicated to safeguarding and protecting IP, genetic resources and traditional knowledge. Traditional knowledge and genetic resources, according to her, have grown in significance for the Indonesian economy in recent years, notably for the pharmaceutical, agricultural and cosmetics sectors.
As a result, Indonesia asked attendees to support and promote the global community’s efforts to safeguard and make use of genetic resources and traditional knowledge related to the community’s genetic resources.
DJKI collaborated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in holding the regional meeting. Usihen said that the regional gathering provided them a chance to exchange thoughts and experiences and deepen their cooperation on IP concerns.
Hundreds of representatives from 48 countries in the Asia-Pacific region were present at the gathering, including the WIPO Secretariat.
