A New Variety of Garlic Patented In Uzbekistan

A new type of garlic with the name "Zhanub," which means "South," was patented by researchers from the Scientific Research Institute of Vegetable Crops, Melons, and Potatoes. It matures more quickly than other types.

"The new variety's relatively quick 200–215 day ripening time is one of its key benefits. The new variety also yields huge bulbs of garlic with 13 cloves, and its quality completely satisfies the standards of the contemporary market. The new variety has good qualities in terms of transportability and shelf life, according to Bakhodir Salomov, the researcher who developed the Zhanub variety at the Scientific Research Institute of Vegetable Crops, Melons, and Potatoes, in an interview with the Uzbekistan 24 TV station.

The variety may be harvested 20 to 25 days sooner than other types if it is seeded as winter garlic in the first decade of September and is harvested in the third decade of March or the first decade of April of the following year. Due to this, Uzbek exporters can access international markets with a fresh harvest of garlic about a month sooner than normal.

"We filed the paperwork to the Intellectual Property Agency, and the variety was granted a patent, says Fakhriddin Rasulov, scientific secretary of the Scientific Research Institute of Vegetable Crops, Melons, and Potatoes, “Our next objective is to develop the production of seeds of the new type.”
