Chinese Noodles Get EU GI Status

Chinese cellophane noodles known as Longkou Fen Si (龙口粉丝) have been granted geographical indication status by the European Union. The noodles are described in the application as “a threadlike dry starch product made from green beans and peas” with an appearance which “is white and translucent; every single piece is of the same thickness (with no doubling or broken pieces); it is soft and elastic; it tastes pure and does not have a strange aroma and it has no impurity apparent to naked eye.”

The noodles are also said to have a high starch content, which allows them to avoid gelatinization when cooked at high temperatures.

The noodles hail from an area located in the north of Shandong Peninsula, within the administrative region of Yantai City in Shandong Province. The Yellow River and the Jie River run through the area.
