IPOPHL signs MoU to promote patent professionalization and IP awareness

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Association of PAQE (Patent Agents Qualifying Examinations) Professionals, Inc. (APPI) to cooperate on intellectual property (IP) awareness and education, capacity building, and development of programs, in line with its thrust of forging partnerships with stakeholders.

IPOPHL Director General Rowel S. Barba and APPI President Editha R. Hechanova signed the MOU in a virtual ceremony on September 7, laying out the areas of collaboration and activities that both parties would pursue over the following four years.

“Through this MOU, our relationship will generate impactful results in our shared aim of encouraging innovation and an atmosphere that acknowledges and fosters research and development and creativity,” Barba emphasized his aspirations.

Meanwhile, Hechanova referred to the inked MOU as a "milestone" in their relationship. "APPI is happy to be “collaborating with IPOPHL on subjects relevant to the patent agent profession with the ultimate goal of elevating it to the level of other licensed professions,” she stated.

The MOU establishes a framework for cooperation that includes discussions aimed at improving IP rules and policies; exchange of research, information, experiences, and educational materials that can help them achieve their common goals; and public awareness campaigns through joint conferences, seminars, and capacity-building activities.
