Cambodia Enters Into Bilateral Agreements With Major Patent Offices

In recent years, Cambodia has entered into a number of bilateral cooperation agreements regarding patent registration - most recently with the USPTO and Korean Patent Office -  as well as joining the Patent Cooperation Treaty. These paths offer foreign patent holders accelerated and simpler paths to extending their rights to Cambodia.

According to David Haskel, a partner at Abacus IP in Cambodia, these cooperation programs have become the main route to obtaining patent protection in Cambodia.

"We have seen a particularly strong uptake of the Chinese validation program - where Chinese patents can be directly converted into a Cambodian patent, without the need for substantive examination," he says. "Similarly, Cambodia is the only country in Asia to be a European Patent Validation state. These provide much quicker and cost-effective filing options, as compared to a direct application."
