Abu Dhabi establishes IP excellence centre

The Competitiveness Office of Abu Dhabi (COAD) at the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) recently established the intellectual property excellence centre to foster innovation and boost Abu Dhabi’s competitiveness on a global scale by enabling inventors to transform their ideas into novel and lucrative business opportunities.

The new centre targets areas of advancement at the convergence of innovation, technology and laws to create an environment that fosters economic growth and draws talent.

By creating the appropriate frameworks, regulations and activities to increase awareness, the centre is devoted to filling emerging gaps, encouraging and rewarding investors and innovators, and supporting stakeholders in the IP registration and commercialization processes. The IP excellence centre is also supplying entrepreneurs, start-ups and SMEs with the skills and resources they need to stay ahead of the competition, starting with legal protection for their concepts and ideas.

Within COAD, the centre will act as a specialized hub dedicated to the efficient administration, defense and enforcement of IP rights.

In addition to guaranteeing a fair and competitive business climate, it will be crucial in promoting the creation and commercialization of intellectual property. Inventors, SMEs, and start-ups will have access to an intellectual property regime that will include more than 21 advisory services across the IP value chain thanks to the IP excellence center’s role as a hub for IP strategy and management across various IP formats, including patents, trademarks, designs, trade secrets, and copyrights.

“Abu Dhabi’s soaring ‘Falcon economy’ is building on our competencies in key sectors, placing digital transformation, innovation, and advanced technologies at the core of economic and social development plans to move into the next stage of our economic diversification 2.0,” said Rashed Abdulkarim Al Blooshi, undersecretary of ADDED. “Therefore, providing innovators with a robust environment to develop and turn their innovative ideas into marketable goods and services is crucial to our growth.”

He added: “We think that this IP excellence center will be crucial in enhancing Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a top location for people, companies and investments.”
