Overview

Tian-ying Zhao joined IntellecPro in 2006 and is currently a partner at the firm. Before joining the firm, she received her undergraduate and graduate education and worked in an immigration firm in Canada.

 

With more than 17 years of experience in intellectual property law, Ms. Zhao works both on contentious and non-contentious matters, and her practice has a particular focus on trademark portfolio development, trademark oppositions/invalidations, enforcement and litigation of trademark rights and copyrights, and alternative dispute resolutions.

 

Ms. Zhao counsels mostly overseas clients, including multinationals and SMEs in a wide range of industries, such as computer software, consumer electronics, fashion goods, food and beverage, media and entertainment, medical devices, medical services, skincare and cosmetics. She impresses her clients with her insightful analysis of the situation and thoughtful advices on legal strategies.

 

Ms. Zhao is a frequent writer on intellectual property topics and has been active in International Trademark Association (INTA) committee work since 2014.

 

Examples of Ms Zhao’s work:

  • Represented the right holder of a popular animation to enforce its trademark rights, copyrights, and merchandising rights through oppositions/invalidations, civil and criminal proceedings, and an out-of-court settlement.
  • Represented a world-renowned medical service provider to enforce their trademark and tradename rights through administrative actions, and reached a nation-wide settlement with a major infringers.
  • Represented an Australian winery in a trademark dispute with a Chinese competitor, defending the winery’s rights over its house mark in trademark invalidation, trademark cancellation and civil litigation.
  • Represented a multinational tobacco company in a criminal case against a large criminal gang engaged in manufacturing and export of counterfeit cigarettes.
  • Assisted a European liquor brand, a European beer brand, a US machinery producer, and a US fashion brand in obtaining well-known mark recognition in opposition/invalidation court appeals.
