Bangkok, Thailand recently hosted a training Seminar on IP Valuation, jointly organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) of Thailand, with crucial support from the Funds-in-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT-Japan).

This training represented a key component of a broader initiative launched in 2023 to advance the ASEAN IPR Action Plan 2016-2025. The programme aimed to promote regionally aligned principles and practices in intellectual property valuation, strengthening transparency and trust in IP-related transactions throughout the ASEAN region. The newly developed ASEAN IP Valuation Toolkit served as the foundational resource for the seminar.

In her opening remarks, Chiyawan Chongvatana, assistant director general of international IP at DIP, observed that “in today’s dynamic economy, intellectual property is a pivotal asset, yet its true value often remains critically underestimated.”

The first day, presented in a hybrid format, was attended by nearly 60 participants, including WIPO’s Technology and Innovation Support Centre staff, entrepreneurs and inventors. The second and third days transitioned to an in-depth, on-site programme for 40 valuation professionals, featuring welcome participation from regional representatives from Brunei, Cambodia, Laos and Singapore.

The substantive sessions were delivered by a roster of leading experts. Michael Kos, IP finance and valuation specialist at WIPO, opened the training by introducing the fundamentals of IP and its valuation. Pairat Monthapan, former president of the Thai Valuers Association, provided a detailed overview of national valuation practices, including regulatory standards and current trends.

Meanwhile, Krissada Jutimongkonkul, chair of the Master of Science program and head of the Innovation Valuation Advisory Centre at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, led a comprehensive series of sessions covering financial concepts, deterministic and probabilistic valuation approaches, the valuation process, and the use of input data and qualitative assessments.

Further enriching the programme, André Gorius, chair of the LESI IP and Finance Task Force, delivered sessions on advanced valuation methods, while Audrey Yap, managing director of Yusarn Audrey LLC, covered topics related to professionalism in IP valuation and reporting. Both Gorius and Yap also co-led practical case study exercises.
