Study: More Than 90% of Patents Belong to Foreign IP Owners
More than 90% of all patents applied for and granted in the Philippines are from foreign IP owners, according to a story in the Business Mirror, citing data from the World Intellectual Property Organization and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines.

Wipo’s 2009 World IP Indicators showed that the Philippines had the third-largest number of patent applications among 20 emerging countries, following Ukraine and Indonesia.

The report, which was based on the 2006 worldwide statistics, showed that nearly 93% percent of the patents filed in the Philippines were from non-resident filers, the newspaper said.

According to data from IP Philippines, 1,378 patents had been granted from January to August 2009, including 766 invention patents, 381 industrial design patents and 231 utility models.

Adrian Cristobal Jr, director general of IP Philippines, told the Business Mirror that two factors led to the low domestic patent filings: the absence or lack of intellectual property policies within higher education institutions, and the lack of capabilities to pursue or “prosecute” patent applications.
