Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co has dissolved following an arbitral award from the Bombay High Court. The firm, which was founded in 1917, closed its doors on May 9.
Brothers Shardul Shroff and Cyril Shroff have formed separate entities, known as Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co and Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas. Media reports in India show that both brothers are allowed to use the Amarchand Mangaldas in their firm name when accompanied by their given names, but that neither is allowed to use the words Amarchand or Mangaldas in their URL.
“Operationally, we have divided the AMSS firm into two regions as how it was functionally, the Mumbai and Delhi regions,” Cyril Shroff told the Economic Times. “In the Mumbai region is the Mumbai ofice, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad, the south region. All of that comes to my part and nothing changes on the ground and we just roll over into the new firm. As a consequence of the two new independent firms, we will open additional ofices wherever we need to. I will immediately start and am working towards a Delhi office.”
