QVOD Copyright Infringement Hearing

On June 17, 2014, a hearing on copyright infringement on China's major video sharing site QVOD was held in Shenzhen.

According to Market Supervision Administration of Shenzhen Municipality, the hearing was held in camera since the case is "related to business secrets."

Zeng Yaodong, an official with the administration, announced for the first time how the fine on China's major online video service provider is comprised.

Media reported that Shenzhen QVOD Technology will be fined ¥260 million (US$42 million) by the administration for linking to pornographic material and copyright infringement before the hearing.

"The fine is based on QVOD's illegal business transactions worth of ¥86.7 million (US$14 million) by violating others' information network transmission rights," he said.

Moreover, considering the company's frequent violations and refusal to correct its illegal activities, the administration decided to impose a fine of three times of its illegal business transactions, he said.

The hearing group will submit the report and suggestion to the administration within seven working days.
