IPOPHL introduces Regional Development Plan on IP

To strengthen intellectual property protection and commercialization capabilities nationwide, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) has introduced the Regional Development Plan on Intellectual Property (RDPIP).

The RDPIP is a three-year program designed to address the specific intellectual property needs of each region to foster innovation and economic expansion. Based on cooperation between the public and private sectors, the strategy seeks to improve IP literacy, promote an innovative culture and coordinate with larger regional initiatives. RDPIP outlines important actions, including performing needs assessments, setting up consultations and initiating regional events.

IPOPHL director-general Rowel S. Barba stated at the RDPIP launch at the IP Convention in Iloilo held on September 26, 2024: “While the RDPIP aims to harmonize IP efforts, it recognizes the varying needs of regions based on the presence of IPOPHL’s Innovative and Technology Support Offices and the level of expertise and commitment of agency partners on IP protection and commercialization.”

The week-long Western Visayas Innovative Startup Fest 2024 concluded with the IP Convention. The subject of the event, which took place from September 23 to 27, 2024, was “Bridging Ideas and Opportunities for a Thriving Startup Ecosystem.”

This year, the RDPIP is expected to change the IP environment in Cagayan Valley in addition to Western Visayas.

The program’s primary implementer, IPOPHL’s Documentation, Information and Technology Transfer Bureau (DITTB), urged current and potential partners to fully embrace the RDIPIP and actively support its goal of promoting innovation across regions.
