IP Australia implements fee changes effective October 1, 2024

IP Australia has implemented changes in fees in connection with patent, trademark, design and plant breeder’s rights. These changes came into effect on October 1, 2024.
Some fees were increased while some were decreased.
“IP Australia’s purpose is to enable Australians to benefit from great ideas by providing a world-leading intellectual property system. Delivery of these elements enables IP Australia to provide an effective framework for the protection of innovative products and brands so its customers have trust in the value of IP and confidence in its ability to meet its clients’ needs for investment in innovation, and to encourage the disclosure of inventions and the transfer of knowledge and technology,” said Mike Zammit, principal and practice group leader for chemical and life sciences at Spruson & Ferguson in Sydney.
The IP body enacted the fee changes following a review process that ran for more than 15 months and included two public consultation phases. IP Australia reviews its fees every four years and adjusts these accordingly to recover costs while aiming to keep the fees as low as possible.
“A healthy IP administration system improves Australia’s economy overall,” Zammit added.
