Cambodian minister stresses importance of IP registration

On May 5, 2025, during an extended celebration of the World Intellectual Property Day 2025 held in Siem Reap, Dith Tina, minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, emphasized the significance of intellectual property registration in raising the value of Cambodian agricultural goods.

The extended celebration, held under the World IP Day 2025 global theme “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP,” was presided over by Cham Nimul, minister of commerce and chairperson of the National Committee for Intellectual Property (NCIP). She was joined by Dith Tina; Hem Vanndy, minister of industry, science, technology and innovation; and Igor Driesmans, European Union ambassador to Cambodia.

Dith Tina expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Commerce for organizing the event, which he said contributes to a global increase in public understanding of intellectual property rights.

The agriculture minister stated in his speech that the ministry places a high priority on intellectual property, especially in the agricultural industry. “In addition to increasing the added value of our agricultural products, registering intellectual property for Cambodian plant varieties can also promote local processing and branding,” he said.

He thanked development partners for their assistance in promoting and safeguarding Cambodian agricultural products, especially geographically indicated goods, such as Koh Trong pomelo, Kampot pepper and Kampong Speu palm sugar.

To increase the competitiveness of Cambodian agricultural products, Dith Tina reaffirmed his strong support for preserving Cambodian product intellectual property and urged more development and value-added processing.
