Baker & McKenzie and FenXun Partners became the first international and Chinese law firms to enter into a joint operation in the China (Shanghai) Free Trade Zone. Their joint operation is the irst time law firms have been approved by Chinese authorities to provide clients with international and Chinese law capacity through the Shanghai Free Trade Zone initiative. Baker & McKenzie was the irst international law firm licensed to practice law in China when it opened in Beijing in 1993. FenXun Partners was founded in Beijing in 2009. The application to form the joint operation is the irst approved by the Shanghai Bureau of Justice.
The Joint Operation will permit collaborative responses to client needs, joint execution of client matters, secondments of lawyers between the irms and exchanges of knowhow. Baker & McKenzie and FenXun Partners will remain structurally separate and independent.
