Malaysian official: Public understanding of IP is still low

During the launch of the Hari Harta Intelek Negara (HHIN), or the National Intellectual Property Day, National Forum 2024 on April 25, 2024, Deputy Minister Fuziah Salleh of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living said that the ministry is dedicated to raising public awareness of intellectual property.
“We are dedicated to supporting the local community in order to foster and grow their creativity as well as assist more innovative business owners in safeguarding their intellectual property,” she said.
According to Salleh, the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) received 246,178 intellectual property registrations until 2023. In addition, she said that 118 geographical indications (GIs), most of which are from Sabah and Sarawak, were recognized as intellectual property through cultural heritage and national treasures.
“In many states, local law enforcement is required to register the items due to a recognition that needs to be safeguarded in order for the product to become a tourist attraction. GI is a symbol that can be applied to products to indicate that they have characteristics and a standing that are attributable to their place of origin,” she said.
