IPOPHL collaborates with investors to enhance PH rank in Global Innovation Index

To forge a closer relationship with the nation’s innovators and inventors, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) and the Filipino Inventors Federation (FILINFED) signed a memorandum of arrangement (MOA). Under the MOA, IPOPHL pledges to offer, among other advanced training initiatives, the support required to give FILINFED members a solid basis in the IP registration procedure for a more seamless and convenient application experience.
The new alliance “underscores IPOPHL’s shared commitment in fostering innovation and supporting inventors in their journey to bring their groundbreaking ideas into fruition,” according to Director General Rowel S. Barba.
He said that IPOPHL might solve the difficulties inventors encounter in safeguarding, enforcing and commercializing their intellectual property while also raising the nation’s ranking in the Global Innovation Index (GII), which it now has at 56th place in 2023. By 2040, the nation hopes to rise to the 25th position in the GII, as seen in the National Innovation Agenda and Strategy Document 2023-2032.
The partnership, according to IPOPHL Deputy Director General Anne Claire C. Cabochan, could help the nation’s GII scores, particularly in the categories of Knowledge Creation under Knowledge and Technology Outputs and Innovation Links under Business Sophistication.
FILINFED President Archie Y. Melano hailed the new partnership with IPOPHL, noting that for inventors to receive funding from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and other benefits, they must register their works. These benefits include tax breaks offered by Republic Act 7549, also known as the Inventors and Invention Incentives Law.
“We hope that most of us in our federation are doing well in business when we get together for our annual talk next year,” said NIC Academe Representative Ria Liza C. Canlas. “Our group aims to improve the quality of inventions and innovations into well-applauded Likhang Pinas (Philippine-made) technologies – products and processes that not only embody Filipino ingenuity but also use resources that protect the environment and uplift the poorest of the poor.”
