Police Create Anti-piracy Unit

The Sri Lankan police have established a new anti-piracy and anti-counterfeiting unit, according to local media reports. The unit, which was created within the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), is designed to protect consumers from purchasing and using pirated and fake products, the department said.

“Piracy, counterfeiting and intellectual property rights infringements are not victimless crimes, and have many different faces,” CID director Wijaya Amarasinghe told Sri Lanka’s Daily Mirror“The Police are fully committed to use enforcement measures on a regular basis to tackle the problem.”
