“The Hobbit” Most Pirated Movie of 2013

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” tops the list of most pirated movies on BitTorrent networks in 2013, according to the news blog TorrentFreak.

The blog, which reports on the latest news about copyright, privacy, and everything related to file-sharing, said that “The Hobbit” had 840,000 downloads, followed by “Django Unchained” and “Fast and Furious 6,” with 810,000 and 790,000 downloads respectively.

“The list showed that movie piracy remains popular, especially for films that are not yet available for download or streaming due to release delays,” the blog reported. It also noted that online streaming and cyber-locker downloads are not included since there are no public sources to draw data from. The total piracy numbers will therefore be significantly higher.

“The Hobbit,” released on December 14, 2012, earned more than US$1 billion worldwide at the box office.
