IPOPHL and Japanese Organization Team Up To Fight Piracy

With the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA), a Japanese organization tasked with combating content piracy and promoting international content distribution, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) has bolstered its efforts to combat piracy.
IPOPHL and CODA shall collaborate to safeguard the protection of copyrighted Philippine and Japanese works in their respective countries under the terms of the MOU. Such a method will streamline the flow of information, research work, statistics, and trends in both nations, hence improving enforcement.
Both agencies will also share effective enforcement tactics, including prevention, online piracy monitoring, rolling takedown and site-blocking. IPOPHL and CODA also agreed to participate in policy development dialogues in order to achieve their common aim of establishing greater respect for intellectual property in society. Furthermore, both will seek to promote one other's awareness and education programs in order to strengthen copyright protection.
"This MOU will be a game-changer in our battle against piracy," said IPOPHL Director General Rowel Barba, "This is an issue we must quickly address amid heightened IP infringement during the epidemic."
Takero Goto, CODA Senior Executive Director, praised IPOPHL for its "long-term dedication and successes in the preservation and promotion of intellectual property." He stated, "By chairing the ANIEE (ASEAN Network of IP Enforcement Experts) from its inception, you have been a leader and a vital component of ASEAN.
In the first year of the epidemic, IPOPHL's IP Rights Enforcement Office received a record amount of 31 piracy complaints and reports (IEO).
