Copyright awareness on 1st Philippine Copyright Summit

The first-ever Philippine International Copyright Summit (PICS), hosted by the Intellectual Propoerty Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) has attracted over 2.5 million visitors and helped promote copyright as a tool to aid the creative economy's recovery from the pandemic.

"The PICS was a definite success in raising awareness, educating the public, and generating respect for copyright and related rights, drawing massive interest and engagement from various creators, developers, and art enthusiasts," said Emerson G. Cuyo, director of IPOPHL's Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights (BCRR).

"With this, we aim to develop an enabling climate for creativity to thrive via intellectual property, particularly copyright, in the years ahead, to maintain the achievements we've earned from this event," he said.

The PICS was a significant and ground-breaking week-long virtual event with the subject "United in Copyright," bringing together powerful actors, experts, policymakers, and other stakeholders in the local and worldwide creative economy to address copyright concerns and possibilities in numerous disciplines.

PICS focused on the present situation of the publishing, visual arts, performing arts, photography, game development, app development, architecture, fashion, music, cinema, and animation sectors in the United States and throughout the world.

Several presenters also discussed important but little-understood features of the legal copyright system, including resale rights, reprographic rights, distribution rights, and freedom of panorama. PICS further clarified the difference between true copyright infringement and unintentional duplication.

The increased interest and concerns about digital music rights, non-fungible tokens, artificial intelligence, and other technologies that are forcing a reconsideration of copyright rules today also took center stage.

Philippine innovators also learnt best practices, including solid copyright tactics, during the Philippines-Korea Copyright Commission Forum, which was hosted during the PICS and aided the Republic of Korea's film, music, and other copyright-based sectors' global progress.

IPOPHL Director General Rowel S. Barba believes the Philippines, like South Korea, can attain worldwide success in the creative economy. He said that the Philippine creative industry is presently undergoing "a massive worldwide expansion," noting the success of the Philippine comic book-based animated series "Trese" on Netflix and HBO Asia's mini-series
adaptation of the award-winning Erik Mati feature "On the Job."

"These recent worldwide victories demonstrate the power of our country's creative industries, which is why we are confident in our goal of creating the Philippines Southeast Asia's leading creative economy," Barba added.

In 2018, the Philippines ranked first in ASEAN in terms of creative services exports and fifth overall in terms of creative exports.
