Overview
Terry Taehong Kim is a Managing Partner of Lee International IP & Law and is leading the PatentDepartment, handling patent cases in the fields of electronics and mechanics for Western andAsianclients. Before entering the legal profession, he spent three years at the AerospaceResearch Institute of Korean Airlines Inc. as a research engineer. He performed structural testsand analyses for Korean Airlines’ light airplane model development project.
Since joining Lee International IP & Law in 1994, Mr. Kim has been involved in preparing andprosecuting patent applications (primarily in mechanics and electronics) before the KoreanIntellectual Property Office (KIPO). He also has extensive experiencein preparing appeal briefsand attending oral arguments/hearings before the Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board(IPTAB) of KIPO and the Patent Court. He has advised numerous multi-national companies,including U.S. and Canadian IT and materials companies, on Korean patent prosecution andinfringement cases. He performed due diligence on the strength of patent portfolios andsuccessfully handled numerous patent litigation matters. For example, he successfullyrepresented a U.S. company against thelargest Finnish manufacturer of paper fabricationmachines in a very complex patent opposition case, and a Japanese company against a Koreancompany manufacturing beauty salon hair dryer in a complex patent infringement lawsuit andrelated invalidation trial.
Mr. Kim is also familiar with U.S. patent law practice, having studied intellectual property law atthe Franklin Pierce IP Law Center at the University of New Hampshire in the U.S. and practicedas a foreign legal intern at Baker & McKenzie in New York. He studied aeronautical engineeringand received B.S. and M.S. degrees at Seoul National University.
