Indonesian students encouraged to study IP

In a statement during a series of activities of the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI), Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly, Minister of law and human rights, taught 5,000 schoolchildren from various parts of the nation about intellectual property.

Laoly observed that kids nowadays in Indonesia have amazing and creative talents, such as manufacturing recycled clothing and authoring books or scientific papers. It is also said that in order to receive a copyright certificate, numerous inventions and intellectual property created by the country's youth must be quickly registered for copyright.

"In my opinion, the Government through the Ministry of Law and Human Rights cq Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) has been very active for the last 3 years in socializing IP knowledge to the public, including the SMEs, universities as well as schools," says Winuriska, a managing partner at WIN IP Firm in Indonesia. "Thus, the teaching program conducted by the Minister of Law is very positive in introducing IP towards students from the early age so as to encourage them to innovate and create new things."

She adds, "During this year, DGIP has launched and implemented 16 excellent programs in order to become World Class IP Office. One of them is DGIP Teaching. The program consists activities of socialization and education on IP involving participants ranging from elementary school – university students.

She says that it is very important for students to be introduced to IP because apart from growing awareness of IP protection from early on, it also encourages the youth to be creative and innovative. "We hope that the young generation can create new innovations that are competitive, creative and improvements of existing technology.," she says.
