With the economy and IP awareness moving more quickly, Jan.–Sept. 2022 IP filings increased by 4.4% YoY
29 December 2022
In the first nine months of 2022, the number of applications for intellectual property (IP) registration submitted to the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) grew by 4.4% compared to the same period last year.
The number of trademarks, patent, utility model, and industrial design submissions from January to September increased to 36,709 from 35,172 during the same period in 2021. In comparison to filings in the first months of 2019, the nine-month total books increased by 3.1%.
"According to the most recent data, IP filings have impressively recovered, and we are on pace to surpass the amount seen before the epidemic. Director General Rowel S. Barba cited the Philippine economy's remarkable average growth of 7.8% in the first nine months of the year, a faster growth than the average GDP of 5.1% in January to September 2021, as the main driver of this. "This is largely driven by increased economic activities as several areas where quarantine restrictions have de-escalated to their laxest yet," Director General Rowel S. Barba said.
The boost was driven by a 5.6% increase in trademark filings, which totaled 31,665. Residents made up 62% of the total, or 19,762.
Patent applications increased by 2.3% to 3,116, with 2,807, or 90%, coming from non-residents.
The number of industrial designs (ID) increased 1% to 923. Non-residents provided the largest boost, contributing 56%.
Utility models (UM), on the other hand, fell by 17.2% to 1,005, with residents making up 96% or 960 of them. UMs offer patent-like protection for a shorter period of time and with a less stringent application procedure.
Barba continued, "We are confident in maintaining our recovery momentum throughout the rest of 2022 as IPOPHL also ensured strong presence in various channels to help more Filipinos protect their IP." Barba noted that IPOPHL has been exceeding various targets on IP awareness for the year, such as in terms of the number of learning events held, participants involved, and media presence.
Pharmaceuticals, health, and cosmetics accounted for the majority of trademark registrations (19.0%), followed by agricultural goods and services (16.8%) and scientific research, information, and communication technology (14.5%).
Pharmaceuticals (29.3%), organic fine chemistry (11.6%), and biotechnology (8.6%) accounted for most patent filings.
Transport or lifting equipment contributed the most to ID applications (18.7%), then packages and containers for the handling or transport of products (9.1%), and furniture (8.4%).
Food chemistry (46.8%), other specialized machines (9.1%), and IT management approaches (4.4%) made up most UM applications.
The number of copyright registrations increased by 69.1% to 2,602, primarily due to an increase in writings such as books, pamphlets, articles, e-books, audio books, comic books, and novels (29%), as well as other literary, scholarly, scientific, and artistic works (27.8%), and models or designs for works of art (9.3%).
