Uzbekistan is significantly advancing its intellectual property agenda through an expanded partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), launching several key initiatives aimed at modernizing its national systems and enhancing its global presence.

A central pillar of the collaboration is the joint development of Uzbekistan’s new national IP strategy, which will guide policy from 2027 to 2030. In tandem with this strategic planning, a significant effort push is underway to identify and protect Uzbek geographical indications – products whose unique characteristics are tied to their origin – through international registration. To showcase these national treasures, officials have proposed a dedicated exhibition at WIPO’s headquarters in Geneva for 2026.

The partnership also emphasizes inclusive growth, with preparations advancing for the final stage of the WIPO Training, Mentoring and Matchmaking Program for Women Entrepreneurs from Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. Following strong engagement from Uzbek participants in earlier phases, Uzbekistan has offered to host the programme’s capstone event in Tashkent or Samarkand in the autumn of 2025.

In addition, Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Justice has also signed a formal memorandum of cooperation with the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Centre. The agreement focuses on promoting the use of alternative dispute resolution for IP-related conflicts. This move is designed to build local expertise in mediation and align Uzbekistan’s IP enforcement practices with established international standards.
