Trade Marks Bill Has First Reading

The Trade Marks (International Treaties and Enforcement) Amendment Bill 2008 had its first reading in the New Zealand Parliament on April 7, according to lawyers at Spruson & Ferguson.
When the Bill is passed, certain provisions within the Trade Marks Act 2002 will be amended, and it will contain provisions relating to New Zealand joining the Madrid Protocol and Nice Agreement, they said.
Other significant amendments include stronger border protection measures to police counterfeiting and the removal of provisions about voluntary registration of licensees.
Additionally, licensees currently registered under the Trade Marks Act 2002 will be cancelled and removed from the trademarks register.
