Report: Government to Hire Up to 500 Patent Personnel

The Government has proposed hiring some 500 personnel to be employed at the patent office, according to lawyers at RK Dewan & Co. “For the already beleaguered staff, this would spell much more efficiency and manageable workloads,” the lawyers said.

The Secretary of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion said at a Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry event that “this year the budget for [IP rights protection] is [Rs700 to Rs800 million] (US$15 to US$17 million). Something like 400-500 people will be employed this year to tone up the administration in the patent office.”

The secretary further stated that “patents and trademarks are two different ball games altogether. Both require different skill sets. We are trying to see whether it is possible (to separate these two),” RK Dewan & Co reported.
