Malaysian durian industry urged to tap GI protection to boost global value

Malaysia’s leading durian varieties should pursue wider geographical indication (GI) protection to strengthen their global profile and unlock greater branding and pricing power, according to senior intellectual property officials.

In a statement, Yusnieza Syarmila Yusoff, director general of the Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation, said more farmer groups and state authorities should apply for GI status for distinctive durians tied to specific regions.

“GI registrations ensure that only producers within the designated geographical areas who meet the required specifications may use these names, thereby preventing parties outside the region from exploiting or misrepresenting these well-known Malaysian durian varieties,” she said.

She added that GI protection allows genuine producers to command a higher value in the market. “GI protection enables genuine producers to enjoy stronger branding and premium market pricing because consumers recognize the authenticity and unique qualities linked to the specific geographical origin,” Yusoff said.

To date, four varieties are registered as GIs in Malaysia – Musang King, Black Thorn, Durian Balik Pulau (Penang) and Durian Nyekak Sarawak. While these enjoy domestic protection, none have yet been registered internationally.

Yusoff noted that international GI recognition would further cement Malaysia’s identity as the authentic source of these globally renowned durians, highlighting the link between their unique qualities, local environments, cultivation practices, and communities. MyIPO, she added, is working with relevant ministries and authorities to explore pathways for international protection.
