Korea combats digital theft through partnership

In a joint effort to combat digital theft in the Asia-Pacific region, the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and the Korea Copyright Protection Agency (KCOPA), which founded Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) as its content-protection arm and anti-piracy coalition, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

The agreement states that KCOPA and ACE will collaborate to raise awareness of intellectual property rights and to offer practical advice on digital piracy, which, while it has long been a problem, has now spread around the world and is believed to be caused by the constantly growing number of paid streaming services.

The two organizations will meet once a year to discuss trends, problems and solutions related to piracy. They will also co-host training and awareness activities to enlighten participants on the many kinds and frequency of piracy occurring in Asia-Pacific.

KCOPA President Jung Youl Park and Karyn Temple, senior executive VP and general counsel for the MPA, signed the contract. “Today’s MOU serves as a symbolic opportunity for KCOPA and MPA/ACE to cooperate on expanding the network to deter and combat copyright infringement of entertainment content, not only in the Asia-Pacific region, but also around the world,” added Park.

“The two organizations plan to continue cooperating on various copyright protection issues to increase synergies in copyright enforcement through the use of mutual networks and to support the continued growth of the creative content industry,” he concluded.
