A raid of hotels in Langkawi revealed that most hotels and restaurants in the Malaysian tourist destination are using pirated CDs, says the Recording Industry of Malaysia (RIM).

“RIM will continue to monitor entertainment outlets in this resort island,” RIM operations director Abdul Rahman Ghazali told reporters after the October raids.

The raids were the first of their kind in Langkawi, and were brought after a complaint was made by RIM.

In separate raids in Johor Baru’s Pandan wholesale market, the Home Ministry’s Film Control Division seized 23,000 pirated DVDs, including pornographic videos, worth more than RM100,000 (US$32,000). According to local media reports, DVD vendors were arrested at seven stalls in the market. “This is our fourth raid at the wholesale market, yet it does not seem to deter them,” said Johor division head Mohd Nashuddin Daud.
