Indonesia unlocks new capital for MSMEs with IP-based financing

Indonesia has marked a historic milestone in its economic development by launching a groundbreaking intellectual property-based financing program for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The landmark initiative was announced last month at the IPXpose Indonesia 2025 event in Jakarta, signalling a major shift in how Indonesia values and utilizes intangible assets for sustainable growth.

The new programme, officially launched by Minister Supratman Andi Agtas, allows MSMEs – the backbone of the Indonesian economy – to leverage their IP certificates as collateral for bank loans. The policy begins with trademarks and is set to expand to include patents, industrial designs and copyrights in the future.

“This is a major breakthrough for MSME players. IP certificates can now serve as financing instruments,” the minister announced at the event. “Let us mark today as a historic milestone in utilizing IP to support the national creative economy.”

The initiative directly addresses a long-standing challenge for many small businesses: accessing capital without sufficient physical assets. By recognizing intellectual property as a tangible, valuable asset, the government aims to unlock a powerful new stream of funding to fuel innovation and growth.

While the launch has been met with enthusiasm, the minister emphasized that successful implementation requires a concerted effort. He called for close coordination between various government ministries, the banking sector and the Financial Services Authority to create a seamless and effective framework for the programme.
