Myanmar steps up its IP push as innovation ambitions take shape

Myanmar is looking to strengthen its intellectual property system as it moves toward a more innovation-driven economy.
The Central Committee on Intellectual Property recently reviewed the country’s progress in building its IP framework. Vice president Nan Ni Ni Aye called for closer cooperation among government agencies to improve IP protection and curb infringement.
Myanmar has already established systems for receiving, examining and registering applications for trademarks, patents, industrial designs and copyrights. The government is also implementing its 2023-2028 National Intellectual Property Strategy.
A key priority is to improve awareness and use of IP rights among businesses, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises. Authorities also want to strengthen links among universities, research institutions and businesses to encourage innovation and technology transfer.
The government is also expanding access to Technology and Innovation Support Centres. It is pushing for stronger protection of regional and local products through IP rights.
Myanmar is also implementing ASEAN’s regional IP action plans and is expected to continue preparing to join international IP treaties and conventions administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization. The goal is to further modernize its IP system and bring it closer to global standards.
