TIPO Limits Trademark Renewals to Six Months Before Expiration

Taiwan’s Intellectual Property Office has announced that renewals of trademarks will only be accepted from six months before the term expires. A report on the TIPO news website indicates that for renewals occurring six months after expiration, the registration fee doubles.

The change in policy is expected to help TIPO avoid disputes arising from renewal requests being filed “much earlier” than the six-month period. The change went into effect September 1, 2010.
