Tetsuhiro Hosono Has Been Named Commissioner Of The Japan Patent Office

Tetsuhiro Hosono has been named commissioner of the Japan Patent Office in Tokyo effective July 14. He succeeds Takashi Suzuki, who served in the role for one year. Hosono is a career civil servant who began his career in the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in 1976. He most recently served as director-general of the Manufacturing Industries Bureau at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.


Tomohiko Makino has joined Bingham McCutchen’s Tokyo office as a partner. He joins from Fuji Law Patent Office in Tokyo, where he was a partner. He has litigated infringement, invalidation and appellate cases for major Japanese corporations and has handled general Japanese licensing, corporate and contract matters as well as strategic intellectual property planning.


Etsuo Doi has joined Foley & Lardner as a partner in its New York and Tokyo offices, where he will work on intellectual property, litigation and transactions. He will also be co-managing partner of the firm's Tokyo office.


Doi represents both Japan-based and international companies in matters relating to cross-border transactions, intellectual property counseling and litigation, e-commerce, joint ventures, licensing and general corporate work. He has extensive experience in Japan handling foreign inbound and outbound investments. He has previously served as corporate counsel at eBay and chief legal counsel at eBay Japan KK and was a partner at Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker.
