Stephen Timms Has Been Named To Head The UK’s Digital Britain Strategy

Treasury minister Stephen Timms has been named to head the UK’s Digital Britain strategy. He succeeds former communications minister Lord Stephen Carter, who has returned to work in the private sector.

Timms is a former e-commerce minister who has worked for Logica and technology analyst Ovum. He will continue as financial secretary to the Treasury and will also report to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, which are responsible for the Digital Britain strategy.

“It’s vital for jobs and growth that Britain is able to maximise the benefits of the digital revolution,” said Timms. “At the top of my in-tray will be plans to ensure faster broadband access for homes and businesses and combating digital piracy – as we move towards publication of the Digital Economy Bill.”

The universal service commitment of Digital Britain envisions 2Mbps internet links to every residence in the country.
