China, US Bust Fake Bags Gang

Chinese and US authorities have broken up a major counterfeiting ring, seizing 20,000 fake bags and arresting 73 suspects in the process, according to media reports. According to the People’s Daily, it is believed the gang made the bags in China, sold them around the world and had made more than Rmb5 billion (US$802 million).

The bust was announced by the Ministry of Public Security, which said that the joint investigation had been launched in January by Chinese police and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. The newspaper reported that the suspects were found to be producing a large number of counterfeits in Guangzhou, Fujian and Anhui, labeling them as famous brands, such as LV,Hermes and Coach, and selling them to the US, the Middle East and other countries.

The ministry said that the size of the organized crime gang and its international network of buyers had increased the difficulty of catching them, but that cooperation with US officials had helped conclude the effort.
