BiotechCorp: ‘More to IP than Filing Patents’

There’s more to practicing intellectual property law than just filing patent applications, Iskandar Mizal Mahmood, chief executive officer of Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation (BiotechCorp), told reporters at Malaysia’s National Technology Transfer Forum in November.

“Intellectual property management is not only about filing patents,” he said. “And sometimes when you file patents, you need to know the claims you need to put into that particular patent. If you do not put the right claim, its going to be worthless,” Iskander was quoted in media reports by the Malaysian national news agency Bermana.

The two-day forum was intended to stimulate discussions surrounding policies and laws relevant to technology transfer, intellectual property and intellectual asset management to stakeholders in areas of biotechnology and life sciences.

Iskander also told reporters that proper intellectual property management is crucial for Malaysia to move forward into the commercialisation phase.

Without a sound intellectual property management system and mechanism in place, commercialisation is going to be a little bit difficult,” he said, according to Bermana reports.
