Malaysia provides fee waivers for PCA

Subject to certain restrictions, the Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation (MyIPO), on behalf of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), is providing a fee waiver for the Preliminary Opinion and Search Service (PCA) for trademarks within a month, until May 23, 2025.
According to Minister Datuk Armizan Ali, the move was intended to promote more trademark registrations and provide more business owners with the chance to safeguard their intellectual property rights. As a result, MyIPO has received up to 61,600 applications related to intellectual property, as opposed to 59,699 during the same time frame in 2022.
“Out of that total, 21,490 applications – a 7.8 percent increase from the previous year – were for local intellectual property,” he said. “To that end, MyIPO will continue to intensify efforts to increase local filings towards increasing the creativity and exploitation of the country’s intellectual property.”
He emphasized that the focus of this year’s National Intellectual Property Day celebration was on the value of intellectual property protection as the cornerstone of a nation being inventive and cultured.
“The top designers and creators, along with organizations that support the intellectual property industry, are recognized with this award,” he stated. He went on to say that the National Intellectual Property Awards are given out by government agencies, educational institutions, commercial businesses and individual competitions to honour the nation’s most creative designers.
Additionally, he highlighted that the Green Technology Award, the Sustainable Work Award, the Millennium Award, and the Permata Award recognize intellectual property. “MyIPO hopes to encourage local creators and designers to continue producing meaningful innovations for the country’s progress through this recognition,” he said.
To date, only Malaysia has been mandated to succeed in the Empowering Youth (K-12) to Innovate for a Better Future project, which aims to promote STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math).
This initiative is also thought of as a forum for the younger generation to address challenges at home and abroad by utilizing intellectual property as a tool to foster innovation.
