Law Firms Hit with 10.3% Service Tax

A 10.3% service tax has been applied to all law firms in India effective September 1, according to an e-mail sent by Chadha & Chadha to its clients.
“Accordingly, with effect from Monday, September 21, 2009, all our invoices shall be issued inclusive of 10.3% service tax on professional fee,” the e-mail said. “This shall apply to all instructions received on or after September 21, 2009 and the professional fee shall accordingly be increased by 10.3%.”
The e-mail noted that the service tax is not applicable on any fee charged for appearance before the Intellectual Property Office or Courts.
