High-profile media lawyers join Australian firm Thomson Geer

Justin Quill and John Paul Cashen, along with their Melbourne-based media law team, have joined independent Australian commercial law firm Thomson Geer. The team, one of the top media law teams in the country, joined from Macpherson Kelley.
The team is currently representing more than 30 media outlets and journalists in a high-profile contempt case involving sexual abuse of children by Catholic Church clergy.
The team also recently represented Australian media personalities in a high profile defamation claim by Nicky Winmar.
The move is the latest by Thomson Geer as the firm works to improve its profile. In July, the firm acquired the Brisbane operations of international firm Dentons; in August, the entire DLA Piper Perth corporate team joined the firm.
“We are continually focussed on securing first class talent to complete our transition to major law firm status,” said chief executive partner Adrian Tembel. “Our lawyers are retained more and more to solve some of business and governments’ most challenging problems or to add value to large and complex transactions. The Quill/Cashen team will expose us to important high profile dealings in the Australian media sector.”
